I think at best we determine for ourselves how significant or how insignificant we are. It becomes a dreadful sport when you make other people the judge of what you’re worth. If what matters most to you is what you signify to other people, it’s going to be a terribly harsh and manic transport from significance to insignificance and back and forth, total vitality to total hollowness and you’re subject to the mercy and whims of others. On the other hand, if how you’ve chosen to dedicate yourself in and to and for this world and this life is firmly significant to you, let the Nay-sayers and the Don’t-cares and the Whatevers come and go. You’ve got your hard core, and no one but you can de-signify that.
